INSTITUTE, Basic (a Glimpse)

The Institute for Healing Racism, Basic, is a ten part directed dialogue between and among an intentionally diverse group of people, guided by trained facilitators and enriched with video and print resources. This is accomplished in an atmosphere of safety, hope, love, and mutual respect. We are not in the guilt business. This program addresses individual racism by raising one’s consciousness to the reality of racism.

INSTITUTE Basic is divided onto ten parts which will be offered in three formats, 2 hours/week over 10 weeks; 4 hours/week over 5 weeks; and 2 all-day sessions.

Session I: Getting to know each other - Introductions, Administration, Overview.

Session II: What is Racism? - View “Ethnic Notions” discuss Stereotypes, etc.

Session III: What does it mean to be a person of color in America? - View the Emmett Till Story.

Session IV: What does it mean to be a white person in America? - View “Free Indeed”, Unpack the Invisible Knapsack, & discuss “White Privilege

Session V: Explore Denial’s Impact. - View “Essential Blue Eyed” and discuss how denial perpetuates racism

Session VI: Explore division amongst people of Color - View “Color of Fear” (1st half) Discuss what needs to be done to overcome conflict and reconcile differences?

Session VII: Explore Forgiveness - View “Color of Fear” (2nd half) Discuss What has to happen to overcome conflict and reconcile relationships?

Session VIII: Explore Institutional Racism - View “True Colors” and discuss the effect that institutional racism has on our daily lives.

Session IX: Explore Healing and the Next Steps - Discuss Healing and how do you apply it in your life?

Session X: Establish Individual Action Plan - Individuals establish their own Action Plans both individually and institutionally.
